Wild Ass Sanctuary

Wild Ass Sanctuary is situated in the Little Rann of Kutch in the western parts of Gujarat. The sanctuary was established in the year 1973 and spans over an area of 4953 sq km. It is the largest abode of the Indian Wild Ass (Equas Hemionus Khur) in the country. This rare animal is found nowhere else in the world. Apart from the wild ass, the sanctuary is home to Nilgai, desert fox, black buck, hyena and wolf. Birds like flamingo, pelican, common crane and other migratory birds visit this place during winter.

How to Reach

The Wild Ass Sanctuary is 130 km from Ahmedabad, 45 km from Viramgam, 175 km from Rajkot and 265 km from Bhuj, accessible from all of these by ST buses. The nearest railway stations are Dhrangadhra - 16 km, Ahmedabad - 130 km and Rajkot - 175 km The Sanctuary has three main access points: Dhrangadhra, Range Bajana and Range Aadeshwar. Range Bajana is the best place to enter in the winter as the wetlands that house migratory birds are closest to it. Dhrangadhra is the easiest place to find transportation and accommodation.
